Time to culture positivity in infants less than 90 days

A retrospective study of infants aged 0 to 90 days who were evaluated for serious bacterial infection looked at the time to detection of positive blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid cultures. Positive cultures were identified in less than 36 hours for 97% of blood culture specimens (n=307), for 95% of urine culture specimens (n=192), and for 86% of CSF specimens (n=14). This raises the possibility that the observation period in the hospital for such infants could be decreased to 36 hours instead of the standard 48 hours.
