Infants (24 – 27 weeks gestation) enrolled in the SUPPORT study were followed up. The composite outcome of death or neurodevelopmental impairment was assessed at 18 – 22 months corrected age. This study had a factorial design that compared early CPAP to early intubation plus surfactant administration and also compared low (85 – 89%) oxygen saturation to high (91-95%) oxygen saturation.
The outcome of mortality alone was higher in the low oxygen saturation group than in the high saturation group (22% vs 18%). However the composite outcome was not different in any of the comparisons.
