Outcome of infants less than 500 grams birth weight

A retrospective review of admissions to a NICU with a birthweight of less than 500 grams found that that proportion of liveborn infants weighing less than 500 grams increased from 0.1% to 0.2% over the years. These infants (n = 26) ranged in gestation from 22 to 28 weeks, with a birth weight ranging from 358 grams to 495 grams. Three-quarters were delivered by Cesarean section and 90% received antenatal steroids. Almost two-thirds of these infants survived until discharge, a survival rate much higher than reported in other studies.
