A prospective cohort study of 100 full-term neonates with neonatal arterial ischemic stroke from Switzerland found the incidence of this condition to be 13 per 100,000 live births. Most (80%) were unilateral strokes and most occurred on the left side. Risk factors included maternal risk conditions, birth complications and neonatal comorbidities. Only 17% received antithrombotic or antiplatelet therapy. Upon follow-up at two years of age, approximately one-third of infants had cerebral palsy and one-third had delayed mental performance.
