Multiple intubation attempts and IVH

A single-center retrospective study of over 300 infants less than 1500 grams birth weight found that infants with severe IVH had a higher number of intubation attempts in the first four days of life than infants with mild or no IVH (odds ratio of around 1.3). This association was true for all intubation attempts in babies less than 750 grams birth weight, and for delivery room intubation attempts in infants less than 1500 grams birth weight.

Intubation attempts increase the risk for severe IVH in preterm infants. Sauer et al, 2016
