Handling of NICU infants

Twenty preterm infants in a Brazilian NICU were videotaped continuously for 24 hours to determine how frequently they were handled for therapeutic, care or monitoring interventions. During this period the 20 infants were handled a total of 768 times and underwent 1341 interventions. The infants were handled anywhere from 14 to 71 times (mean of 38 times) each in the 24-hour period, with an average of 2.2 interventions per handling episode. The total handling time per infant ranged from 53 minutes to five hours, with a mean of around 2.5 hours each.
