Early low-dose hydrocortisone to prevent BPD

A multicenter double-blind randomized study from France of over 500 infants less than 28 weeks gestation compared the use of a ten-day course of intravenous hydrocortisone started by 24 hours after birth to placebo. Infants receiving hydrocortisone had a higher rate of survival without BPD than placebo infants (60% vs 51%). The rate of intestinal perforation did not differ between the groups, although in 24-25 week infants the sepsis rate was higher (40% vs 23%)
