Bed-sharing on maternity wards and risk of death or near-death

A case series of fifteen healthy newborn infants who died or three who nearly died when sharing a bed with the mother on a maternity ward found that accidental suffocation was the most likely cause of these incidents. These cases were identified by contacting members of the National Board of Medical Examiners. One or more factors that increase the risk of bed-sharing were present in all of these cases.
