Amino acid intake in extremely preterm infants

A randomized trial from Italy in extremely preterm infants receiving TPN compared the routine use of 2.5 grams per kg per day of amino acids to 4 grams per kg per day, with equal non-protein energy. Each group had almost 60 infants. Compared to the infants receiving lower amino acid intake, infants receiving the higher amino acid intake had a higher frequency of elevated blood urea nitrogen (59% vs 24%) but a lower frequency of hyperglycemia (11% vs 34%). Measures of growth and development were similar between the two groups on follow-up.
